Kids used to call her “Rabbit Teeth”. Stefani, known professionally as Lady Gaga was also mocked and bullied at school for being weird. She took refuge in music and learned to play Piano by ear. Lady Gaga started performing at open mic nights and school plays. Her aunt Joanne was an artist that died before she was born and she was inspired by her to pursue music.

She auditioned for roles in New York musical but never got called back. The bullying continued in high school, where other kids called her “the Germ.”

It was a difficult period for Stefani and her school work suffered.

After school, she took acting classes and worked at a diner, and then underwent intense therapy after she was assaulted.

She dropped out of school to recover and to focus on her career. She stuck to her dreams and wanted to make it on her own terms.

She took all kinds of music jobs:

She recorded songs for a children’s audiobook. She dragged her piano everywhere and played shows in dive bars for small crowds. She apprenticed as a songwriter. She traveled to New Jersey every day to work with a producer.

and then eventually she got signed to a major label. Only to be dropped by the label 3 months later. She regrouped and performed burlesque shows, and then caught a lucky break:

She was hired to write songs for Britney Spears, Fergie, and New Kids on the Block. Akon was so impressed with her, that he signed her to his label.

Some radio stations found her new music too “racy” and “underground”.

Today she is known for her unconventional and provocative work. She is worth more than $250 million and has sold more than 30 million albums and 150 million singles.

A visionary and trailblazer, she is consistently at the top of many lists:

At the 2016 Oscars, she performed “Till It Happens To You,” a powerful song about surviving sexual abuse.

Suffering from fibromyalgia, she is an outspoken advocate for chronic pain sufferers, and also raises money for marginalized youth, as she had once been.
