This a story, I came across through a post on Goalcast about why you should remember Aretha Franklin. Her story is really inspiring one. Despite the hardship, she encountered throughout her life. She became the Queen of Soul. I was so much impressed by her story that it came to me as an immediate urge to share it with you.

So, Why you should remember Aretha Franklin?

Aretha was born in Memphis in 1942. Her mother left when she was only 6. Four years later, she died of a heart attack. Aretha’s father was a Baptist preacher, known as the man with “Million Dollar Voice”. Aretha inherited his gift. 

I sing to the realist. People who accept it like it is. 

She was also a self-taught pianist. She began touring when she was only 14. In 1967 she released her first hit RESPECT. 

Aretha was then a mother of three and a victim of domestic abuse. She recorded the song as a cri de coeur.

We all require and want respect, man or woman, black or white. It’s our basic human right.

The following year, she performed at Dr. Martin Luther king’s funeral. When questioned on her weight, Aretha always responded with confidence and humor. 

Who hasn’t had a weight issue? If not the body certainly the big head!

A high school dropout, Aretha received 12 honorary degrees. She has performed at 3 presidential inaugurations. 

Aretha was the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She held 44 Grammy nominations and 18 wins, making her one of the most honored artists in history. 

Most of all, the Queen of Soul remains a symbol of empowerment for past generations, and those yet to come…
